EXPERIENCE THE HEART POUNDING EXCITEMENT OF TAIKO

Seattle Kokon Taiko brings you their performance of "Rites of Thundering." Taiko is a dynamic synthesis of rhythm, movement and spirit originating in Japan and evolving as a folk art over the last several hundred years. Since 1992 Seattle Kokon has been mixing the ancient with the modern; their repertoire is a mix of traditional pieces and contemporary compositions. You may recognize many of their faces--the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community has had the privilege of hosting Seattle Kokon Taiko at their events for more than 20 years!

MYSTERIES OF TAIKO: LEARN ABOUT THE ORIGINS OF THIS ANCIENT ART FORM

Stanley Shikuma of Seattle Kokon Taiko demystifies the art of taiko drumming. In this detailed lesson, Stan takes us through the origins, mythology, and evolution of taiko in Japanese culture leading to its modern-day ensemble form.

LEARN HOW TO PLAY A TAIKO PIECE

Lika Seigel of Seattle Kokon Taiko gives Virtual Mochi Tsuki visitors a private lesson on the different types of taiko drums, how to fashion your own drum and sticks, and how to play your very first piece!

WERE YOU THERE? MOCHI TSUKI DREW ITS LARGEST TAIKO AUDIENCE OF ALL TIME

JaniceK shares her taiko experience at Mochi Tsuki 2019, our first year at Woodward Middle School. 600 guests jammed the gym under the watchful eye of the fire marshall. Watch the performance virtually--no line!

Thank you to our good friends at Seattle Kokon Taiko for taking their personal time to create and entertain. Neither pandemic, nor record snow can keep them from participating in Mochi Tsuki. Yet again, you are a highlight of our celebration. Akemashite Omedetou!
