The Bainbridge Island Museum of Art will be hosting an online workshop led by Michelle Kumata, whose work is currently featured in the group exhibition Breathe at the museum.

THE WORKSHOP

Create a personal portrait that honors a family member or friend and bring it to life with imagery from a range of possible media including paint, collage, colored pencils or other materials that you have at hand. Exploring imagery, words and phrases that describe the personality, qualities, and stories around subjects’ lives will be “visualized” through words, drawing pictures, playing with color and texture and composition.

ABOUT MICHELLE KUMATA

Michelle Kumata is a 3.5 generation Japanese American artist and Seattle native with a BFA in Illustration from The School of Visual Arts in New York, NY. She worked as a graphic artist at The Seattle Times for over a decade. She also served as Exhibit Director at Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific American Experience for 12 years. Michelle is influenced by heritage, identity and legacy. She is currently exploring the Japanese diaspora in the U.S. and Brazil through oral histories and visual storytelling. Michelle’s work has been shown at the Center on Contemporary Art, Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, Asia Pacific Cultural Center and The Society of Illustrators Museum, New York, NY. She received a 2019 4Culture art grant for her Japanese Brazilian Diaspora Project, and her work is in the collections of Asian Counseling and Referral Service and the Seattle City Light Civic Art Collection.
