“Kansha” in Japanese means “in gratitude.” At the first national Kansha Awards, the National Japanese American Historical Society posthumously honored Walt and Milly along with four other non-Nikkei individuals, and one group — the American Friends Service Committee — for their courage and kindness during the exclusion.
