In Memoriam: Teruko “Terry” Marlatt

Teruko “Terry” Marlatt passed away peacefully on May 10, 2022, age 95, in Reno, NV. Terry was born on Bainbridge Island, Washington, on February 21, 1927 to parents Zenhichi and Shiki Harui. She was 15 years old when her family left Bainbridge Island for Moses Lake in advance of the forced removal of Islanders. However, Terry and her brother Art had already left to receive their education in Japan when Terry was only 12 years old. She was unable to return to the U.S. until 1947.

The Haruis owned the famed “Bainbridge Gardens”, which is still owned and operated by the Harui family today. The Harui family’s love of plants and nature was apparent in Terry’s garden as well. She never visited family or friends without taking a clipping or plant from her garden.
